    Workshop Overview

    Goal

    • Provide teachers with a deeper understanding of what the eight effective mathematics teaching practices are, how they can be implemented in the classroom, and what can be gained from making them a part of one’s daily teaching practice. Following an overview of the eight practices, teachers will engage in a set of activities (e.g., exploring rich mathematical tasks, analyzing narrative and video cases of classroom instruction, analyzing student work samples) that will highlight a subset of the practices in more depth. The session will include with an opportunity for teachers to collaboratively plan and discuss a lesson that attends to the eight effective teaching practices

    Outcomes

    Participants will:

    • Learn what the eight effective mathematics practices are and identify aspects of the effective mathematics practices in a portrait of teaching practice
    • Understand how the eight effective teaching practices support students’ learning
    • Explore two of the effective mathematics teaching practices (questioning and productive struggle) in depth
    • Engage in planning a lesson that attends to the eight effective teaching practices, with a focus on one of the two focal practices
