Linking Mathematics to the Real World

Students' understanding of mathematics will be empowered through the investigation of mathematics in the real world. This grant will incorporate the use of literature, manipulatives, and DVDs to enable students to connect the mathematics they are learning in the classroom to the mathematics used around the world. Students will engage in activities that are high-interest, cross-curricular, and related to current events. The materials will allow students to connect NCTM's content standards of Number and operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis and probability to applications in the real-world. NCTM's process standards of Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections, and Representation will be incorporated as students use the materials in this proposal to build a deeper understanding of mathematics as they make connections to the mathematics around them.
