Customizing Learning for Gifted and Talented Students in Mathematics: Pilot Project Grade 5

Diane Smith collaborating with Margaret Griswold, University of Maine, Farmington, Maine

This pilot project will partner a gifted coordinator for mathematics and three, 5th grade classroom teachers [each with three gifted and talented classroom students & a student teacher] to promote classroom instruction for gifted students that focuses on critical/creative thinking and problem solving and permit students to progress at their own rate.

This project will pilot the geometry unit of M3: Mentoring Mathematical Minds. It will utilize the web-based program ALEKS to monitor student performance to move students at their own rate. The gifted coordinator and university math educator will provide professional development for the geometry unit and ALEKS.

Performance of gifted students will be compared to the last two years of gifted students in geometry content studied, student performance, and time spent on learning activities in the classroom.

The project outcomes will instruct the implementation into other grade levels and other math content.
