Complex Instruction and Effective Groupwork Strategies at Washington Middle School

Complex Instruction (CI) is an effective group-based pedagogy grounded in research that can help teachers provide a rigorous and equitable classroom for all students, regardless of their ethnicity, language, socio-economic and/or achievement backgrounds. We believe that implementing CI strategies in every classroom at Washington Middle school would result in a shift in the culture of math learning, and would help all students achieve mathematic success. Implementation of this plan would require that all teachers gain skills and competencies needed to integrate CI strategies into all classrooms. To this end, we request funds to attend the Summer 2015 Designing Effective Groupwork in Mathematics course at the University of Washington to develop the tools we need to meet the needs of our students.
