Helping Math Make Sense for Every Student
As a child, I never had a math teacher who encouraged me to ask “why” things worked the way they did. I only fell in love with mathematics through my training as an educator and my ensuing work with children, when I began to understand math more deeply. I am actively pursuing two goals in my professional work. The first is to further strengthen my own math teaching at the upper elementary level, particularly by including rich problem solving and exploration in the math curriculum. The second is to work with the teaching faculty at my school as a math coach. The Masters of Arts in Mathematics Teaching at Mount Holyoke College will provide the necessary expertise in both the relevant mathematics concepts and the pedagogy involved. Ultimately, I can help the students in our school, regardless of gender, race or background, feel that math makes sense to them.
