Connecting Mathematical Practices to Mathematical Content through Modeling Real World Situations

Penn Alexander School will engage in professional development around integrating the process of modeling real world problem situations into the existing math curriculum to enhance the development of deep understanding of essential concepts as well as the mathematical practices as defined by the Common Core Standards for Mathematics and the NCTM Focal Points. Teachers will focus on developing understanding of mathematical content and processes for Kindergarten through 5th grade students by selecting rich contexts that allow students to conceptualize, model, and use mathematical skills and concepts to understand complex and realistic situations. The outcome of this inquiry will be that our students will be better able to apply their understanding to "mathematize" real world situations and increase both content and process proficiencies. Through inquiry, classroom implementation, and reflections, we will seek to demonstrate how to connect the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice to the Standards for Mathematical Content.
