Engaging all Learners: Using Math in the City in a Diverse, Urban School

At The Children's Lab School, we strive to give every student access to authentic, indepth math learning. We serve students in an urban environment, from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, who have a variety of academic needs and abilities. In order to better serve our students, we are engaging in summer training and on-site professional development from Math in the City (MitC). MitC was founded in 1995 by Cathy Fosnot and strives to give all students a strong, conceptual understanding of math processes. It promotes active use of the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice and engages students in real-world problem solving. MitC PD will focus on areas of school need, with a focus on incorporating the Practice Standards into our math lessons and daily routines. Through professional development from MitC, we anticipate that our teachers will be better able to engage all learners in rich, meaningful math learning.
