    Edwin I. Stein has made many contributions to mathematics education in his lifetime. His gift to the Mathematics Education Trust (MET) supports the Future Leader Initial NCTM Annual Meeting Attendance Awards. 

    Stein graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at the age of 19. He went on to do graduate work at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. 

    After briefly working as a traffic engineer, Stein began his 25-year teaching career in the Philadelphia School District. Throughout his career, Stein wrote more than a dozen mathematics books, which continue to aid educators today in teaching mathematics. He published his first math book, Refresher Arithmetic, in 1943. Other books include Algebra in Easy Steps and Fundamentals of Mathematics.

    Stein used some of the proceeds from his works to establish a MET endowment fund. 

    Edwin I. Stein died in 1990 at the age of 80.
