    Julius H. Hlavaty has played a prominent role in mathematics education. Gifts to the Julius H. Hlavaty Fund provide travel and expenses for student members of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) to attend a NCTM conference.

    Hlavaty was affiliated for many years with Columbia University, where he served as an instructor at Teachers College. He taught at several New York City high schools and was the first chairman of the department of mathematics at the Bronx High School of Science. He served on the Commission on Secondary School Curriculum and the Curriculum Workshop at Syracuse University. Hlavaty lectured and appeared on the national educational program Continental Classroom, broadcast on NBC-TV. He also instructed many National Science Foundation (NSF) institutes for teachers of mathematics.

    Julius Hlavaty was an active member of NCTM and served as NCTM President from 1968 to 1970. In addition, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Mathematical Association (AMA), the National Education Association (NEA), the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the Central Association of Teachers of New York State, and the New York Academy of Sciences, as well as the Mathematics Chairmen's Association and the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, both of New York City.
