How the Collection Works

Once you have purchased Exploring Math through Literature, Pre-K–8 you can access it anywhere—computer, smartphone, tablet—using any device with an Internet connection and browser access.

You have eight mathematical subject areas to explore. These subject areas are aligned to specific grade bands—pre-K–5, pre-K–8, or 6–8—and to specific domains of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) as follows:

  • Number & Operations—aligned to Counting and Cardinality, Number and Operations in Base Ten, and Number and Operations—Fractions
  • Algebraic Thinking—aligned to Operations and Algebraic Thinking
  • Measurement & Data—aligned to Measurement and Data
  • Geometry—aligned to Geometry
  • Ratios & Proportions—aligned to Ratios and Proportional Relationships
  • Expressions & Equations—aligned to Expressions and Equations, and The Number System
  • Statistics & Probability—aligned to Statistics and Probability
  • Functions—aligned to Functions

When you reach an article’s front page, you’ll find information about the particular CCSSM standards and the works of children’s literature that its lesson plans or activities will encompass. You can then download the full article from Teaching Children Mathematics or Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, along with any associated lesson plans or activity sheets. Articles and lesson plans are provided as PDF files, while activity sheets are Microsoft Word files that can be adapted for classroom use.
