    When children solve problems in ways that make sense to them instead of practicing procedures that they have been taught, things can become messy both mathematically and socially. This article examines some of the challenges that teachers and children face when a problem-solving approach is used for mathematics instruction. Additionally, examples are included that demonstrate how mathematical problems can be challenging for both children and teachers in some unexpected ways.
