Chapter 10: Metaphors: A Powerful Means for Assessing Students’ Mathematical Dispositions. Jinfa Cai (University of Delaware) and F. Joseph Merlino (The 21st Century Partnership for STEM Education) describe how using metaphors can be a powerful means to assess students’ dispositions toward mathematics. Using metaphors offers students a much richer context and vocabulary to express and communicate the nature and intensity of their dispositions toward mathematics than do multiple-choice surveys. The authors also introduce quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze students’ metaphors. By using metaphor surveys, teachers can develop better strategies to engage reluctant learners and win over complacent student peer cultures.
