Purpose of project: The project’s goal is to build future leaders by providing participants an opportunity to volunteer and become involved at the state level.

Project description: A short pre-session evening conference for new teachers was piloted at last year’s state conference. A longer pre-session conference is planned for the February 2007 state conference. New teachers can attend the pre-session conference free of charge. The pre-session is designed to promote the role of ICTM and provide an opportunity to meet and network with the state’s mathematics education leaders as well as provide participants a variety of materials to increase or spark their interest in professionalism and becoming more effective classroom teachers.

Monies from NCTM allotted for: Helping defray the costs of materials, facility rental, printing, and door prizes (copies of NCTM’s Empowering the Beginning Teacher series of books).

Purpose of project: To educate a new cadre of teachers that can assume leadership roles in mathematics education.

Project description: The target group for this three-year project is early career teachers (i.e., those with 2–5 years of teaching experience). A goal of OCTM is to increase OCTM and NCTM memberships. For two years, each of the 14 OCTM area representatives will identify two early career teachers to be the recipients of memberships, conferences, workshops, and mentoring and other help for three years. (Details of each year’s programmatic activities were outlined.) Professional memberships will be encouraged in the second year. The program will be adjusted annually based on the year’s evaluations/suggestions.

Monies from NCTM allotted for: With the total cost of the three-year project at $10,520, the monies will be used to help with the costs of memberships. All additional cost will be borne by OCTM.
