Purpose of project: To have teams of mathematics educators, consisting of current PCTM leaders and future leaders, work to align the eligible grades 3–8 Pennsylvania content and assessment anchors with the NCTM Focal Points. Also, through their work on this project, future leaders in mathematics education will gain professional development.
Project description: Teams of mathematics educators, to include current and potential future PCTM leaders, will be established in three regions across Pennsylvania. Each team will concentrate on a single grade band, 3–4, 5–6, or 7–8, and be charged with analyzing the Focal Points for the respective grade bands and then aligning Pennsylvania’s eligible content and assessment anchors with those Focal Points. Specific tasks for the three work sessions and an appropriate time line were delineated. The final product will be distributed initially to each PCTM member and to all Pennsylvania district directors of mathematics and will eventually be posted online. These groups and others will be surveyed to determine the product’s effectiveness.
Monies from NCTM allotted for: Lodging for team members who attend the work session and production of the final product costs are budgeted for the $1500 grant funds. All additional costs (e.g., meals, additional lodging costs, and additional production costs) will be borne by PCTM.
