Product Description

By Peggy House

By Denisse R. Thompson, Michael T. Battista, Sally Mayberry, Karol L. Yeatts, and Judith S. Zawojewski

Problem solving and reasoning are students' processes of actively applying what they know to new problems from diverse areas of mathematics. Knowing a variety of mathematical ideas is insufficient unless students can draw on, integrate, and use them to solve challenging, complex problems.

The Navigating through Problem Solving and Reasoning books for grades 3-6 present hands-on investigations that nurture reasoning and problem-solving strategies in each of the upper elementary grades. In investigations for grade 5, children reason about place value and divisibility by making a PIN for a security system, explore rates of change by projecting sales at a new pet shop, and determine the best month for a ski trip by analyzing snowfall data. Students apply mathematical ideas from the five main content areas-number, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis. As they work, they infer, generalize, reason by analogy, recognize relationships, and make representations, and they also predict, check, and revise and verify their results.

The Navigations Series translates Principles and Standards for School Mathematics into action. Each book includes practical, teacher-tested activities and a supplemental CD-ROM that features applets for students' use and resources for teachers' professional development.

Navigating through Number and Operations in Grades 3-5 (with CD-ROM)
Activities in this book invite students to use fraction circles to compare fractions and dot arrays to explore multiplication and the distributive property. The authors present many other hands-on approaches as well.$46.95
Navigating through Problem Solving and Reasoning in Grade 4 (with CD-ROM)
In addition to using Eratosthenes' sieve to identify prime numbers, fourth graders evaluate algebraic relationships in contracts between theater owners and movie distributors.$30.95
Navigating through Problem Solving and Reasoning in Grade 3 (with CD-ROM)
Through the investigations in this book, children reason about place value, understand related changes in two quantities, and analyze data.$30.95
Navigating through Algebra in Grades 3–5 (with CD-ROM)
The important ideas of algebra, including patterns, variables, equations, and functions, are the focus of this book. $36.95
Navigating through Measurement in Grades 3–5 (with CD-ROM)
This book follows students' natural progression from measuring with informal or nonstandard units to using standard units to measure such attributes as length, weight, angle, and temperature. $41.95
Navigating through Geometry in Grades 3–5 (with CD-ROM)
The "big ideas" of geometry–shape, location, transformations, and spatial visualization–are the focus of this book.$37.95
Navigating through Data Analysis and Probability in Grades 3–5 (with CD-ROM)
An assortment of discussions, activities, and investigations emphasize the collection and analysis of data and develop the idea of probability as a measure of the likelihood of events that are meaningful and real to students.$34.95
Navigating through Problem Solving and Reasoning in Prekindergarten–Kindergarten (with CD-ROM)
The investigations for prekindergarten and kindergarten contained in this book engage students in activities where they apply mathematical ideas from the five main content areas–number, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis.$26.95
Navigating through Discrete Mathematics in Prekindergarten - Grade 5 (with CD-ROM)

Provides hands-on activities that focus on systemantic counting, vertex-edge graphs, and iterative and recursive processes.
