Learning about Fractions as Points on a Number Line. Geoffrey Saxe,
Meghan Shaughnessy, Ann Shannon, Jennifer Langer-Osuna, Maryl Gearhart (all of
University of California – Berkeley) and Ryan Chinn (Willard Middle School,
Berkeley, California) exploit the potential that number lines have for
supporting students’ understanding of fractions in the upper elementary and
middle school grades. Their research interweaves developmental studies of
children’s understandings of fractions with classroom studies on students’
learning and the pedagogical strategies that support their learning.
