Chapter 16: Creating an Equitable Learning Environment for Teachers
of Grades K-8 Mathematics.
Valerie DeBellis (Shodor Education Foundation, Greenville, North Carolina) and
Joseph Rosenstein (Rutgers University) present a program in which teachers are
exposed to new mathematics topics and are provided with an environment that
enables all of them to learn the topics. In this program teachers are amazed
with what they are able to learn, and they are constantly encouraged to reflect
on how they are learning the new material. It is hoped that through the
teachers’ own experiences with learning in such a risk-free and empowering
environment that the teachers will do the same with their own students.
