Chapter 6: What We Teach Is What Students Learn: Evidence from National Assessment. Peter Kloosterman (Indiana University, Bloomington) and Crystal Walcott (Indiana University–Purdue University Columbus) present data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress to show that students’ performance has improved at the elementary and middle school levels on topics that received increased attention in the 1989 NCTM Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics. Along with data by content strand, the chapter gives examples of the types of items that national assessment uses.
