This PDF file presents a chapter of Mathematics Curriculum: Issues, Trends, and Future Directions (72nd Yearbook) in a downloadable file that preserves the design and layout of the book while allowing users to search and print selected pages.
Chapter 12: Designing Curricula to Expand and Extend Mathematical Knowledge. Debra I. Johanning (University of Toledo) draws from NCTM’s Curriculum Focal Points for Prekindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics and classroom examples to illustrate a view of curriculum that looks across grade levels and across mathematical content to build connections. By considering what aspects of a mathematical topic to develop in an instructional unit focused on that topic, and what to develop by situating that topic’s development into the foreground or background of other topics in later units, teachers can focus instruction on fewer main ideas while promoting depth.
