Here is a listing of the topics that will be covered throughout the Minneapolis Regional Conference:

  • Algebra—algebraic thinking, patterns, functions
  • Assessment—high-stakes testing, instructional strategies, classroom and large-scale assessment, formal and informal questioning, policy decisions, and program evaluation
  • Calculus and Discrete Mathematics—calculus, precalculus, discrete mathematics, symbolic logic, sets or set theory, and graph theory

Thursday, November 5, 2009 from 5:00-6:15 p.m. 

CONNECT is an informal gathering for mathematics teachers in their first few years and for pre-service mathematics teachers to help make your new teaching career a successful one. We’ll have teaching resources, ideas, inspiration, opportunities for networking, socializing, and door prizes. 

  • Meet NCTM and MCTM leaders up close!
  • Get suggestions about useful conference sessions to attend!
  • Meet other teachers with similar interests!
  • Hear teaching tips from outstanding veteran teachers!
  • It'll be over early so you won't miss dinner!

New and Preservice Teachers Workshop

A must for every new teacher! This is your chance to get answers to your questions on management, parents, homework, and more! Plus you can connect with other new teachers just like you. This workshop will provide helpful insightful resources, materials, and fun prizes to those in their first five years of teaching or those seeking certification. There will be a session scheduled on Thursday and Friday.

Thursday, November 5
Focus one full day on the Focus of the Year topic, Connections: Linking Concepts and Context. The strand begins with a morning kickoff session and concludes with an end-of-the-day Reflection session. In between, you choose from among a number of sessions exploring the topic, all marked with the symbol (above). Immerse yourself in the topic and collaborate with leaders and colleagues. Receive a personalized certificate by mail when you attend the Kickoff, at least one LearnReflect session, and the culminating Reflection session.

Making Connections: Linking Concepts and Context
This session will set the stage for the LearnReflect strand, focusing on connections. The speaker will introduce the connections standard in relation to connecting concepts among different mathematical ideas, the interrelatedness connections of mathematical topics, and the connections between contexts outside of mathematics. 

Learn↔Reflect Reflection Session

Thursday, November 5
In the culminating session of the Learn↔Reflect strand, participate in a facilitated discussion of the reflection questions from the Kickoff session. Anyone who attends the Kickoff session, at least one Learn↔Reflect session during the day, and the Reflection session will earn a personalized certificate, which will be mailed following the conference.
