2014 Annual Meeting 590

Number and Operations: Be Radical and Get Real!

Learn-Reflect Strand Icon 2013

Learn↔Reflect Strand
Thursday, April 10, 2014

Plan one full day for the Focus of the Year topic, Number and Operations: Be Radical and Get Real! The strand begins with a morning Kickoff session and concludes with an end-of-the-day Reflection session.

In between, choose from a variety of presentations, all marked with the symbol above. Immerse yourself in the topic, and collaborate with leaders and colleagues. We ask participants to reflect on the following questions throughout the Learn↔Reflect strand and then discuss them at the end of the strand, during the Reflection session.

Reflection Session

End your day with a Reflection session at 3:30 p.m., where you’ll discuss the day’s learning in the context of the following reflection questions:

    1. What is number sense, and how can you promote the development of number sense in your students? How are fluency and understanding related in the context of number and operations?
    1. How can instructional decisions facilitate the development of strategies that are meaningful and transferable for operations on all numbers?
    1.  How are equity and diversity promoted by developing conceptual understanding of number?
    1. How can the Standards for Mathematical Practice support the development of number sense and computational fluency?
    1. How are you thinking differently about your learning and teaching of number and operations as a result of participating in the LearnReflect sessions?

Strand Goals and Overview

Focus of the Year
Number and Operations: Be Radical and Get Real!

The intent of NCTM’s yearlong focus on Number and Operations is to help teachers, school leaders, and teacher educators expand their view of the foundational role of number and to demonstrate the importance of developing all students’ understanding of and ability to use number. This focus supports effective mathematics teaching, enhances mathematics learning, and helps students to navigate a world where an understanding of number is crucial. Students who are provided with the opportunity to investigate number and operations deeply are able to model and solve complex problems, work at higher levels of generalization, and be more logical in their decision making. This is the premise of a comprehensive and equitable mathematics education program.
