Principles and Standards for School Mathematics
Overview
We live in a time of extraordinary and accelerating change. New knowledge, tools, and ways of doing and communicating mathematics continue to emerge and evolve. The need to understand and be able to use mathematics in everyday life and in the workplace has never been greater and will continue to increase.
In this changing world, those who understand and can do mathematics will have significantly enhanced opportunities and options for shaping their futures. Mathematical competence opens doors to productive futures. A lack of mathematical competence keeps those doors closed. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) challenges the notion that mathematics is for only the select few. On the contrary, everyone needs to understand mathematics. All students should have the opportunity and the support necessary to learn significant mathematics with depth and understanding. There is no conflict between equity and excellence.

Visión general
Vivimos en un tiempo de cambios extraordinarios y acelerados. Nuevos conocimientos, herramientas y formas de hacer y comunicar las matemáticas continúan apareciendo y evolucionando. La necesidad de entender y estar preparado para usar las matemáticas en la vida diaria y en el trabajo nunca ha sido más grande y continuará creciendo.
En este mundo cambiante, aquellos que entiendan y puedan utilizar matemáticas tendrán oportunidades y opciones significativamente mejores para enfrentar su futuro. Las competencias matemáticas abren puertas hacia futuros productivos. La falta de competencias matemáticas mantiene esas puertas cerradas. En este sentido, el Consejo Nacional de Profesores de Matemática de los Estados Unidos (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, NCTM) cuestiona la idea de que las matemáticas son para un pequeño y selecto grupo de personas. Por el contrario, todos necesitan entender matemáticas y los estudiantes deben tener la oportunidad y la ayuda necesarias para aprender contenidos matemáticos que sean relevantes con profundidad y comprensión. En otras palabras, no existe conflicto entre igualdad y excelencia.
