Attend ICME-11 in Monterrey, Mexico

Applications for travel grants are now available to attend the Eleventh International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-11/ www.icme11.org), which will be held in Monterrey, N.L., Mexico, July 6-13, 2008. The application deadline is September 30, 2007. Notifications will be made by December 30, 2007.

These grants will be available only to US citizens and permanent resident aliens and will support travel expenses from the United States to ICME-11 for K-12 mathematics teachers, mathematicians, graduate students, and mathematics teacher educators. These expenses include:

  • hotel accomodations
  • meals
  • conference registration
  • air transportation (on American carriers only).

Note: Travel grant awardees under this program may not use funds from other NSF programs to supplement their airfare to Mexico or subsistence at ICME-11. Questions can be directed to Gail Burrill.

The terms of the proposal to NSF require that each grantee do several things.

  1. Prepare a typed report that must include the following:

A specific statement about the content of the sessions in which you participated or attended and how they were or were not relevant to your work in the United States.

A statement of what you learned at ICME-11 that is relevant to the teaching of mathematics, to improving the mathematical and/or pedagogical preparation of teachers, to research in mathematics education, or to another aspect of mathematics education in the U.S.
  2. Complete a post-ICME-11 questionnaire related to the conference and its impact on your work.
  3. Take part in a particular theme group around a selected topic, seek out sessions at the Congress relevant to that theme, and with members of your group, prepare a written report on the discussions and presentations that took place. This report will be published in appropriate journals and news bulletins. A tentative list of themes is on the grant application.

The International Congresses are held every four years and offer a unique opportunity for mathematics educators from the United States to discuss issues related to mathematics education with international leaders from developed and developing countries. Grants will enable participants to listen to world-renowned scholars in mathematics and mathematics education and to take part in small, focused discussion groups on a wide range of topics, including special emphases on educating students from diverse cultures, mathematics education for second language learners, the relationship between research and practice in mathematics education, the professional development of mathematics teachers, closing the achievement gap, and information and communication technology in mathematics education.
