The National Mathematics Advisory Panel was appointed in 2006 by President George W. Bush to advise the President and the Secretary of Education on the best use of scientifically based research to advance the teaching and learning of mathematics.  The Panel was charged with making recommendations on improving mathematics achievement for all students, with a focus on preparing students to take and succeed in algebra.  The final report, “Foundations for Success,” was released on March 13, 2008.

Many of the findings from the Panel’s report are consistent with NCTM’s work since the Council ushered in the standards movement in education in the 1980s.  Here, NCTM connects the Principal Messages from the National Mathematics Panel report to the Council's past work and issues of concern:
