Reston, Va., May 17, 2013— Jane Porath, a mathematics teacher and site
leader at Traverse City East Middle School, has been elected to the Board of
Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
Porath began her three-year
term (2013–2016) at the conclusion of NCTM’s 2013 Annual Meeting and Exposition
in Denver on April 20. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is the public
voice of mathematics education, providing vision, leadership and professional
development to support teachers in ensuring mathematics learning of the highest
quality for all students. With 80,000 members, NCTM is the world’s largest organization
supporting mathematics educators in all 50 states and Canada.
Porath’s professional interests include educating adolescents and
making a significant impact on their lives by helping them reason and make
sense of mathematics, working with the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service
in piloting assessment items aligned with the Common Core State Standards for
Mathematics, and infusing the modeling of effective pedagogy with significant
mathematics content in professional development offerings.

Middle School (MTMS)

In addition to membership in NCTM,
Porath has professional affiliations with the National
Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and the Michigan Council of Teachers of
Mathematics (MCTM). She is also publications director (2012–) and an elected board
member (2010–) of MCTM and has been a presenter at MCTM annual conferences
(1998–). Porath has also been a presenter at Getting to Know Connected Mathematics
Project (CMP) Conferences (MSU, 2005–) and CMP Users’ Conferences (MSU, 2000–).
In addition, she is a member of the Advisory Board of Mathematics Teacher
Circles (2010–) for the American Institute of Mathematics and a professional
development consultant in various school districts (1998–).
