Gender Culturally Relevant Teaching Special Needs Students
Preservice Teachers Examine Gender Equity in Teaching MathematicsIn this article, the author reports elementary preservice teachers examined one math teaching episode for equitable practices. They taped, transcribed, coded, and analyzed their teaching using verbal interaction categories. Next, they documented exposed inequitable teaching practices, examined their potential impact on student learning, and developed intervention plans. Many preservice teachers were surprised to find inequitable behavior in their teaching. Ways of adapting this project to address other aspects of inequitable practice is shared.
