Background
Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 Illuminations Summer Institute (ISI), a two-week intensive residential program, held at the NCTM headquarters in Reston, Va. ISI is a unique opportunity for participants to:
- LEARN – Attend professional development events with some of the nation’s leading math educators.
- GROW – Collaborate with other attendees to learn more about teaching mathematics, and develop materials for your classroom.
- CONTRIBUTE – Develop lessons and activities for Illuminations.
Each institute participant will be required to develop four lessons for the Illuminations Web site. Attendees will have access to all NCTM resources, including the library of every book and journal ever published by NCTM, as well as NCTM staff. Each attendee will be allowed to select and keep several books from the NCTM catalog. For the creation of these lessons, each attendee will earn a stipend of $1,000, which will be paid upon completion and acceptance of the lessons by the Illuminations Review Panel. Additionally, all expenses—including housing, travel, and meals—will be covered by NCTM.
NCTM will invite up to six educators from grades pre-K to 6. Applicants must be current NCTM members and must have experience as a classroom teacher. The lessons developed will be expected to be at the pre-K to 6 grade level.
