Ms. Hauser - The Task

The Hexagon Train Task

Take a look at the Hexagon Train Task below and spend some time working through it yourself and/or with a colleague before moving on. The materials in this cluster will be more meaningful after you've had the chance to experience the task as a learner.

In this narrated slideshow, mathematics educator Eric Milou shares some possible solution strategies students might bring to this task and talks through the underlying mathematical reasoning.

"Connection to Common Core State Standards for Mathematics"

The Hexagon Train Task provides students with a context to move from verbal description of pattern generalization to representation of a pattern with mathematical symbols. While this cluster focuses on students' investigation of the growth pattern with numerical examples, this work is extended later using variables for figure number and perimeter to create mathematical equations. This task supports students' development of proficiency in the following content standards from the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

    Grade 6:
CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.C.9 Use variables to represent two quantities in a real-world problem that change in relationship to one another

    Grade 7:
CCSS.Math.Content.7.EE.A.2 Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related.
CCSS.Math.Content.7.EE.B.4 Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

In addition, students' work on the Hexagon Train Task will engage them in the following Mathematical Practices from the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

CCSS.Math.Practice.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
    CCSS.Math.Practice.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
    CCSS.Math.Practice.MP4 Model with mathematics.
