**The Hexagon Train Task**

In this narrated slideshow, mathematics educator Eric Milou shares some possible solution strategies students might bring to this task and talks through the underlying mathematical reasoning.

"Connection to *Common Core State Standards for Mathematics*"

The Hexagon Train Task provides students with a context to move from verbal description of pattern generalization to representation of a pattern with mathematical symbols. While this cluster focuses on students' investigation of the growth pattern with numerical examples, this work is extended later using variables for figure number and perimeter to create mathematical equations. This task supports students' development of proficiency in the following content standards from the *Common Core State Standards for Mathematics*:

Grade 6:

CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.C.9 Use variables to represent two quantities in a real-world problem that change in relationship to one another

Grade 7:

CCSS.Math.Content.7.EE.A.2 Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.EE.B.4 Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
