Although debates about whether, when, or how to teach students to divide common fractions seem trivial in light of the events of September 11, the basic goal of providing children all over the world with a high-quality mathematics education seems no less important today than it did on September 10. Given the critical role and importance of mathematical proficiency in influencing an individual's chances for a productive life, perhaps this goal of researchers and other professionals in mathematics education all over the world is today more important than ever.
