Delving Deeper: In-Depth Mathematical Analysis of Ordinary High School Problems

Abstract:
In this regular department of "Delving Deeper", the article analyzes a simple motion problem used in high school curriculum. "Extended analysis" is used to find a general algebraic solution to the motion problem rather than a numerical solution for one set of data. The article makes a case for attention paid to mathematical reasoning and to using good mathematical habits of mind to avoid teaching stereotypes that students tend to memorize.
