Sharing Teaching Ideas: The Extension-Reduction Strategy: Activating Prior Knowledge

Clifford Sloyer

August 2004, Volume 98, Issue 1, Page 48

Abstract:

An important problem-solving strategy and corresponding activities that build on the prior knowledge of students. The author used the problem of finding the volume of a cup with unequal radii for a calculus class. He presents the students' reactions and solution strategies as they are led to think of their prior learning in algebra and geometry and apply it to new problems.
