Activities for Students: Curve Stitching: Linking Linear and Quadratic Functions

Trisha Bergthold

January 2005, Volume 98, Issue 5, Page 348

Abstract:
An activity about curve stitching focused on teaching parabolic functions. The author uses the art of curve stitching to demonstrate a connection between linear and quadratic equations. Activities are hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections. Activities is a regular feature of Mathematics Teacher and highlights activities that develop conceptual understanding of mathematics topics. An activity using curve-stitching helps prospective teachers investigate linear and quadratic functions.
