Delving Deeper: Using Similarity to Derive a Formula for the Distance from a Point to a Line

Abstract:

This month: two contributions from readers. In the first, teacher Marsha Hurwitz shares one of her student's derivation of the formula for the distance from a point to a line which uses similar triangles. In the second case, areas under a curve provide a geometric interpretation of the formula for integration by parts. Also includes "Calculus Technique of Integration by Parts, Correlated with a Geometric Picture" by Albert T. Fromold Jr.
