Media Clips - September 2006

September 2006, Volume 100, Issue 2, Page 110

Abstract:
The clips this month focus on scientific notation and large powers of ten, and income-related topics, including inflation and taxes. Students examine issues of reliability and relative error, the meaning of a googol, and the earnings of Jeopardy winners. The aim of Media Clips is to provide opportunities to students to analyze items from the media, such as advertisements and newspaper articles, to answer mathematical questions related to the article. The section includes short items from the media that highlight interesting uses or misuses of mathematics that are appropriate for classroom study. Media Clips is a regular department of Mathematics Teacher. Problems and solutions for each clip are provided.
