Mathematical Lens
Mathematical Lens: Iron Gate, Greenfield, Massachusetts

Roger Turton

September 2006, Volume 100, Issue 2, Page 131

Abstract:
This issue’s photograph is of a curved bar on an iron gate and target questions focus on mathematical topics that include graphing, functions and relations, and symmetry. The graph could be described using a trigonometric, exponential, or rational function. Mathematical Lens uses photographs as a springboard for mathematical inquiry. The goal of this department is to encourage readers to see patterns and relationships that they can think about and extend in a mathematically playful way. Mathematical Lens is a regular department of Mathematics Teacher.
