Mathematical Lens: The Heliconia Plant, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Miami, Florida
November 2007, Volume 101, Issue 4, Page 265
This issue’s photograph is of the Heliconia plant and target questions focus on mathematical topics that include geometric attributes—the size and angle of its bracts (leaves)—as well as possible geometric planting arrangements. Mathematical Lens uses photographs as a springboard for mathematical inquiry. The goal of this department is to encourage readers to see patterns and relationships that they can think about and extend in a mathematically playful way. Mathematical Lens is a regular department of Mathematics Teacher.
