Mathematical Lens
Mathematical Lens: Restaurant Doorway, Tokyo, Japan

James Metz

December 2007, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 350

Abstract:
This issue: Four triangles and a smaller square coming together to form a much larger square. Target questions focus on mathematical topics that include the Pythagorean Theorem and area. Mathematical Lens uses photographs as a springboard for mathematical inquiry. The goal of this department is to encourage readers to see patterns and relationships that they can think about and extend in a mathematically playful way. Mathematical Lens is a regular department of Mathematics Teacher. Sample questions and solutions are provided.
