Connecting Research to Teaching: The When and Why of Using Proportions
Karen Heinz, Blair Sterba-Boatwright
March 2008, Volume 101, Issue 7, Page 528
The "Connecting Research to Teaching" department consists of articles that bring research insights and findings to an audience of teachers and other mathematics educators. This month, the authors use a well-known problem to analyze student notions of proportion. Preservice elementary teachers were posed a problem that appears to have proportional elements. Most overlooked a difference relationship. The authors establish guidelines for teaching proportional reasoning. This department is edited by Libby Knott and Thomas A. Evitts.
