Soundoff
Sound Off!: To CAS or Not to CAS?

Andrew Freda

August 2008, Volume 102, Issue 1, Page 8

Abstract:

The use of computer algebra systems in the mathematics classroom. The author proposes that while computers and calculators are welcome additions, they are not necessary for teaching mathematics. That is, good teaching does not require CAS, but it is equally true that use of CAS does not preclude good teaching. Soundoffs are Mathematics Teacher’s version of an op-ed, an opinion written by someone not affiliated with the editorial panel. Soundoffs are a regular department in Mathematics teacher, where the author advocates a point of view about some aspect of the teaching or learning of mathematics.
