Sound Off!: High School Mathematics: Why the Rush?

Thomas Rothery

December 2008, Volume 102, Issue 5, Page 324

Abstract:
What responsibilities should teachers, schools, and districts take when creating mathematics curriculum geared towards “gifted” students?  This editorial propose that all too often, the “quicker is better” approach is used as teachers and districts push students through classes in order to reach the pinnacle of all mathematics classes—BC Calculus— more quickly. Although some students are ready for advanced-level courses, others succumb to pressure, lose confidence in their abilities, and eventually stop taking mathematics classes.
