Mathematical Roots: The Other Life of Florence Nightingale

Christine Franklin

February 2002, Volume 7, Issue 6, Page 337

Abstract:
An individual who is not commonly discussed as an early contributor to the study of statistics is the famous English nurse Florence Nightingale. After returning from the Crimean War and for the rest of her life, Nightingale promoted the use of statistics to analyze social conditions, especially medical conditions, as a tool to formulate public policy.
