The Thinking of Students
The Thinking of Students: Making Waves

Edward Mooney

October 2006, Volume 12, Issue 3, Page 171

We focus on students’ solutions to the "Making Waves" problem. The problem involved finding the area of an irregular figure taken from a circle, and student solutions used semi-circles, nested circles, completing the circles, and calculating one third of the total area. The article also includes extensions of this problem using other amounts of waves.

The Thinking of Students shares the thinking of middle school students as they explore and communicate mathematics. It highlights students' work, including projects, investigations, or creative solutions to the problems in the monthly menu. The department is a forum for sharing students’ discoveries, thoughts, problem solutions, or even challenges. The Thinking of Students is a regular department of Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.
