Math Roots: A Dozen Ways to Celebrate Mathematician of the Month

Jamie Fugitt

February 2007, Volume 12, Issue 6, Page 333

Abstract:

An activity about mathematicians focused on teaching appreciation of mathematics as a great cultural achievement. One effective and enjoyable way to incorporate this information into the classroom is to celebrate the life and work of a mathematician each month. Thirteen activities designed for such celebrations are described. Mathematical Roots are hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections.

Mathematical Roots is a regular feature of Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School and highlights activities that develop conceptual understanding of mathematics topics.
