Quick Reads: Another Good Idea: Integers Made Easy: Just Walk It Off

Julie Nurnberger-Haag

September 2007, Volume 13, Issue 2, Page 118

Abstract:

A multisensory method for teaching students how to multiply and divide as well as add and subtract integers. This article describes a multisensory approach for teaching operations on integers. Sidewalk chalk and the underlying concept of integers engage students in understanding integers and developing computational fluency. Students with special needs find this method particularly helpful and engaging. Quick Reads focuses on providing the reader with activities or ideas for the middle school classroom that are quick and applicable.  Quick Reads is a regular department of Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.  Its aim is to publish single ideas that are too good not to be published, but are not long enough for a full article. Topics include research, collaboration and "what works" in the classroom.
