Abstract:

 Author discusses the view that students can gain a better understanding of decimal numbers by focusing on changes in the place value of digits rather than on the decimal point. Readers are encouraged to respond to this editorial by sending letters to Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School at mtms@nctm.org for possible publication in “Readers Write.”
