Mathematical Explorations: It Is a Piece of Cake: Algebraic Thinking in a Real-Life Situation

Ji-Eun Lee, Kyoung-Tae Kim

August 2008, Volume 14, Issue 1, Page 52

Abstract:

An activity about cutting cake focused on teaching algebraic relationships. Students will develop rules for numbers of cuts in each direction related to number of pieces with one, two or three faces of icing. Mathematical Explorations are hands-on, open-ended activities that encourage problem solving, reasoning, communication, and mathematical connections.

Mathematical Explorations is a regular feature of Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School and highlights activities that develop conceptual understanding of mathematics topics. Activity sheets are included.
