May 2007, Volume 13, Issue 9, Page 498

Abstract:

Solving Problematic Word Problems in Addition and Subtraction, those that can't be solved with a straightforward arithmetic operation, is the focus of this issue’s Research, Reflection, and Practice.  Students and prospective elementary teachers' strategies to solve problems whose solutions are 1 more or less than the result of adding or subtracting two given numbers is studied, with recommendations for instruction.  Research, Reflection, and Practice aims to bridge the gap between research and practice by describing current research and then demonstrating its importance and applicability to practicing classroom teachers.
