Research, Reflection, Practice: Algebraic Thinking and Pictorial Growth Patterns

Esther Billings, Tarah Tiedt, Lindsey Slater

December 2007, Volume 14, Issue 5, Page 302

Abstract:

This issue: Pictorial Growth Patterns. How second- and third-grade children engage in algebraic thinking as they explore pictorial growth patterns. In particular, the authors describe five different processes that the children used to analyze, extend, and generalize relationships found within these pictorial growth patterns.

Research, Reflection, Practice aims to bridge the gap between research and practice by describing current research and then demonstrating its importance and applicability to practicing classroom teachers.
