Abstract:

This article describes aspects of Japanese schooling that are typically omitted from cross-national research, which the authors believe to be important for U.S. teachers' interpretations of cross-national differences.  In My Opinion articles are personal opinions intended to initiate reflection among practitioners and debate among the journal's readers.  In My Opinion is a regular department of Teaching Children Mathematics.
