Learning Our Way to One Million

David Whitin

April 2008, Volume 14, Issue 8, Page 448

Abstract:
This article describes five episodes in which children in grades 2–5 explore the concept of one million in a variety of ways. The children tie this large number to familiar contexts and use such concepts as area, length, place value, money, and ratio to solve the problems they pose for themselves.
